2026 Dependency Judicial Training Academy

May 18th-20th   |   Virtual    

The 2026 Dependency Judicial Training Academy is designed to strengthen judicial and court capacity to meet these challenges and improve outcomes for children, youth, and families. Recent developments in case law and legislative updates are shaping practices in dependency cases, requiring professionals to stay informed and adaptable. Key areas of focus include understanding common mental health diagnoses and implementing effective strategies to connect families with appropriate services, as well as addressing the growing impact of fentanyl and accurately interpreting toxicology results. Courts are also prioritizing approaches to domestic violence, best practices for including and engaging youth in the courtroom, and advancing procedural justice and system civility. Additionally, judicial leadership is increasingly incorporating HOPE Science to foster positive outcomes and strengthen trust within the system.

Registration is open to: Superior Court Judicial Officers, Tribal Court Judicial Officers, Court Administrators, FJCIP Coordinators, Judicial Officers, Commissioners, Staff Attorneys and Externs from the Washington Court of Appeals and Washington Supreme Court are welcome to attend.

 

Bridging Systems: Understanding Guardianship Across Courts, DCYF, and Communities (Session 3: Systems Collaboration & Real-Life Application-Legal Panel)

This session will highlight strategies for working effectively with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), courts, and kinship programs to strengthen collaboration across systems. Through a panel discussion featuring representatives from courts, DCYF, and kinship programs, participants will explore practical examples of coordination and learn approaches to enhance partnerships with legal and community stakeholders.

Bridging Systems: Understanding Guardianship Across Courts, DCYF, and Communities (Session 4: Lived Experience & Integration-Lived Experience Panel)

This session will feature a panel of guardianship families sharing real-life strategies experiences for navigating legal systems, DCYF processes and community supports.  They will shared lessons learned, strategies for improving practice and integrating insights to inform future collaboration.   

Communities of Practice are collaborative groups of professionals who share a common concern, a set of problems, or an interest in a topic. These groups meet on an ongoing basis and focus on sharing best practices and creating new knowledge to advance a specific domain of professional practice (e.g., judicial practice). By fostering collaboration and continuous learning in a virtual environment, FYJP’s Communities of Practice enhance the effectiveness of professionals and systems, ultimately improving outcomes for children and families. Dependency 101 for Judicial Officers

The Dependency 101 for Judicial Officers Course is designed to facilitate the delivery of quality, interactive, on-demand virtual trainings that examine the information, practices, and skills judicial officers need to effectively preside over child abuse and neglect cases in Washington State. The modules in this course examine the essential principles of dependency court systems and judicial decision-making that ensure safety, due process, timeliness, permanency, and well-being for children and families.

Dependency 201 for Judicial Officers

The Dependency 201 for Judicial Officers Course is designed as the next step for judicial officers who have completed Dependency 101 or who are seeking deeper engagement with the complexities of child abuse and neglect cases in Washington State. These interactive, on-demand modules explore advanced topics in dependency law and practice. They build on foundational knowledge to strengthen judicial officers’ skills in balancing competing interests, analyzing complex case dynamics, and ensuring decisions are legally sound, trauma-informed, and responsive to the needs of children and families

Safety Snapshots Mini-Series

This mini-learning series contains short training, practice, and knowledge test activities that are all centered around the effective application of the Safety Framework into dependency court system practice.

FJCIP Data Training Modules

This series of training modules was created for FJCIP Coordinators to increase data capacity in dependency courts.

Family Treatment Courts Best Practice Standards Training

This series of training modules are based of the Family Treatment Court Best Practice Standard Published in 2019. These best practices were developed using current research and practices in the field as determined by a team of experts from across fields of Child Welfare, Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Drug Court, and Dependency Best Practices. 

Early Childhood Courts Judicial Training

This collection of recorded training sessions from the  Children’s Bureau’s Child Welfare Capacity Building Collaborative, Zero to Three, and National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges focus on primary skills and knowledge that judicial officers would need to effectively preside over a specialty Early Childhood Court.

Safety Summits

The goal of this cross-system training is to help local dependency court systems enhance child safety practice by using a common framework for talking about child safety. When all court and system partners utilize a shared understanding and language to clearly and consistently articulate safety-related information, including the harms of removal, the court can engage parties in meaningful inquiries in ways that support improved outcomes for children. 2025 High-Potency Synthetic Opioids Virtual Training Series

This six-part virtual training series explores the critical intersection of high potency synthetic opioids (HPSOs), such as fentanyl, and the child welfare system. Designed for judicial officers, attorneys, child welfare professionals, child advocates, healthcare providers, and community partners, the series provides comprehensive guidance on identifying risks, understanding the impact of HPSOs on families, ensuring child safety, and implementing trauma-informed and culturally responsive interventions.
 

2025 Dependency Judicial Training Academy

The 2025 Dependency Judicial Training Academy was held May 19th – 21st.  This multi-day, virtual training is open to Superior Court and Tribal Court judicial officers, court administrators, and FJCIP Coordinators. Judicial officers and staff from the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court are also welcome to attend.

Hope Week 2024

During the week of June 24th-28th Hope Rising Washington is planning a series of events to support a Hope Centered Washington. The purpose of these events is to bring awareness to the power of hope. Community organizations, leaders, and champions for youth are encouraged to attend. 

2024 Dependency Judicial Training Academy

FYJP hosted the 2024 Dependency Judicial Training Academy on May 13th, 14th & 15th. This judicial training focused on building the capacity of courts to make safety decisions that balance the protection of a child with the preference for family preservation. Highlights of the academy include assessing safety in cases involving fentanyl.

Keeping Families Together Act: Basics for the Bench

This past May, Family & Youth Justice Programs (FYJP) held the 2023 Dependency Judicial Training Academy which was entirely focused on preparing courts for the monumental changes of the Keeping Families Together Act. In response to numerous requests, we will be offering a condensed, 1.5-day version of the academy in August 2023.

HB 1227 Cross-System Regional Webinars

FYJP will be partnering with the Department of Children, Youth & Families to host cross-system webinars aimed at supporting local court communities in understanding and preparing for the implementation of the Keeping Families Together Act (HB 1227).  

Permanency Considerations for Legal Professionals in Washington

This virtual training by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption will introduce its evidence-based, child-focused recruitment model while also reviewing common legal issues that can present barriers to pursuing permanency for youth in foster care. FYJP was pleased to partner in the planning of this training.

Attorney Academy on Reasonable & Active Efforts

Family & Youth Justice Programs is excited to partner with the Capacity Building Center for Courts (CBCC) to host the WA Attorney Academy on Reasonable & Active Efforts in the spring and summer of 2023. This virtual training is designed to help attorneys practicing in the Washington child welfare system gain the knowledge and skills.

Family Treatment and Healing to Wellness Courts met on June 29, 2022 to discuss the challenges and opportunities for therapeutic courts working with families in rural communities in Washington. The meeting included a brief introduction to the current research available regarding virtual hearings, substance use disorder and mental health treatment, and best practices of virtual

2022 Judicial Training Academy on Reasonable and Active Efforts

Family & Youth Justice Programs, in partnership with the Capacity Building Center for Courts, presented the Washington Active and Reasonable Efforts Judicial Academy in the Spring of 2022. This two-day, virtual training was offered twice, first on March 31-April 1 and again, April 14-15, with a maximum registration of 16 judicial officers per day. 

Washington ICWA Court Summit – October 25, 2021

On October 25, 2021, the Washington ICWA Court Summit will be held online. This is a joint effort of the National Council of Family & Juvenile Court Judges, Casey Family Programs and the Family & Youth Justice Programs. 

2021 Judicial Academy on Reimagining Justice in Child Welfare and Dependency Court

CITA is offering an interactive, virtual judicial training series, “Reimagining Justice in Child Welfare and Dependency Court.” The training will occur on: May 24th (Monday), June 1st (Tuesday) and June 9th (Wednesday).
